World Curling launches the ICE 2034 Environmental Sustainability Strategy

World Curling, with the assistance of UK based Sporting Giants, have launched the ICE3 2034 Environmental Sustainability Strategy that aligns with eight of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The World Curling Sustainability Working Group was created in 2023 with the responsibility to propose strategies, policies, rules and recommendations that empower World Curling and its Member Associations to implement sustainability best practices and actions in alignment with the Federation’s strategic commitments and goals.

The ICE3 2034 Environmental Sustainability Strategy is the first major component produced by the working group and focuses on nine key areas:

  • Infrastructure
  • Ice Making
  • Investments
  • Competition Delivery
  • Calendar of Events
  • Carbon Footprint
  • Equipment Manufacturing
  • Education
  • Engagement

The strategy details the opportunities for World Curling in each of these areas along with strategic outcomes and deliverables for the organisation.

The strategy has been developed to ensure a holistic approach to sustainability throughout the Federation and integrates with the recently announced Global Facilities Certification Programme, ensuring that new and existing curling facilities adhere to high standards of operational excellence, sustainability, and inclusivity.

As a foundational component of the Sustainability Strategy, World Curling joined the Sports for Climate Action Framework in 2023 with a commitment to reduce the organisation’s Green House Gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach Net Zero Green House Gas emissions by 2040.

Kim Forge, World Curling Vice-President and Chair of the Sustainability Working Group said, “This strategy is a bold step forward in future-proofing our sport. By aligning with the IOC’s sustainability agenda and collaborating with international sports federations and our Member Associations, we’re not just responding to change — we’re leading it.

“ICE3 2034 represents a unified vision to protect the places we play, the communities we serve, and the integrity of curling for generations to come.”

Scott Over, Sporting Giants CEO said, “It’s been a real privilege for Sporting Giants to work closely with World Curling on the creation of the ICE³ 2034 Sustainability Strategy.

“As newcomers to the sport, we were quickly inspired by its deep sense of community and global reach. This strategy is the result of a genuinely collaborative process, shaped by passionate people who care deeply about curling’s future. It takes a clear, practical approach to climate action while embracing wider environmental themes—from infrastructure and energy use to equipment and education.

“We’re proud to have played a part in shaping a plan that will not only help protect and grow the sport but also inspire broader leadership across the sporting world.”
