Sweden continue unbeaten run at World Men’s

With two wins in Monday’s third day of play, Sweden continued their unbeaten run at the LGT World Men’s Championship to sit alone at the top of the table, undefeated with five wins.

In the morning session, the Swedes were 8-6 winners over Czechia. In the afternoon, it took them all the way to a steal of two in the extra end to defeat Norway, by 10-8.

Against Norway, the game was tied at 6-6 after seven ends. In the eighth, Norway skip Magnus Ramsjfell played a raised double take-out to score two and take an 8-6 lead.

In the tenth end, Sweden skip Niklas Edin played a double take-out across the house to score two points and level the game at 8-8, forcing an extra end. In that extra end the Swedes made it impossible for Ramsjfell to find a way onto the button and stole two for the win.

After their earlier win over Czechia, Swedish lead Christoffer Sundgren said, “That was tricky at the start. Both teams struggled but we got it going and got the win.”

He was also full of praise for his opponents, saying, “Czechia made a lot of run-backs and forced a few nice shots out of us to get out of it. They’re keeping lots of games tight.”

Behind Sweden, Italy and Scotland share second place on the table on four wins and one loss.

The Scots only had one game on Monday, beating New Zealand by 8-2.

Italy played twice and won both games. They started with an extra-end 7-6 win over Canada and then beat Korea by 8-5.

After his team’s win over Canada, skip Joel Retornaz said, “We had a good performance. They’re one of the best teams in the world and it was a good one to win.”

About the extra end, he said, “I knew from the start of the extra end I would have to play a draw, and I was trying to plot every single stone coming down in that end. My team did an amazing job; they knew the path I had to throw and kept it clean. They also did an amazing job in clearing out guards in front of the house, so I had an easy draw to the four-foot to win.”
