New Zealand mark first World Women’s win

New Zealand made sporting history on the second day of the BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship when they recorded their first-ever victory in this event. They marked an 8-6 win over Scotland in Sunday morning’s third session of round-robin play.

Afterwards their skip Jessica Smith said, “that was pretty good, we played well as a team. We’re getting better and better all the time and that’s a nice feeling.”

However, the New Zealanders then suffered a 12-4 loss to Korea in the afternoon’s fourth session.

Canada played United States in their only game on Sunday and won by 10-6 to top the rankings unbeaten on three wins. They are joined at the top of the table by defending champions Switzerland, who beat Estonia by 9-3 in their only Sunday game.

Sharing top spot with the Swiss and Canadians are Italy, who had two wins on Sunday – a 6-4 victory over Sweden and an 8-2 win over Scotland.

Behind the three joint-leaders, two teams share fourth spot – Denmark and Korea, on two wins and one loss.  Denmark had both of their wins on Sunday – by 10-4 over Türkiye and then 6-5 against Japan.  United States also have two wins – beating Norway by 7-5 on Sunday evening, but they also have two losses.

Japan, Norway, New Zealand, Scotland and Türkiye all sit at one win, two losses. Türkiye bounced back from their defeat at the hands of Denmark by beating Japan by 6-4 in Sunday afternoon’s session.

After this win, their skip Dilsat Yildiz said, “the team played well, so we’re improving. We’re trying to improve every year.  We’ve been a team together for three years and our plan means that we’re looking towards the Olympics.”

At the foot of the table, Estonia and Sweden are both still looking for their first victories.
