Applications open for Sports Media Trainee Programme 2024

The World Curling Federation is pleased to open applications for our Sports Media Trainee Programme 2024.

The Sports Media Trainee Programme is designed to give young professionals the opportunity to gain invaluable, hands-on, media experience at international curling events.

Applications are open in two categories:

  • Communications Assistant
  • Photographer

The trainee Communications Assistant will interview athletes, write features, create content for social media and report on the competition. Photographers will capture, edit, select and distribute images of the competition.

The work of both trainees is published on the World Curling Federation website and social media channels which can be used by our Member Associations and external media outlets.

Entries will be accepted from those who are between 18-35 years old (on the application deadline), have a passion for sport and a keen interest in writing and social media content creation or photography.

Applicants do not need to be enrolled in formal education in order to be eligible for the programme.

The successful candidates will be invited to one of the following World Curling Federation events:

  1. World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2024 / World Senior Curling Championships 2024 (Oestersund, Sweden) 20-27 April
  2. Pan Continental Curling Championships 2024 (TBD) October-November
  3. Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2024 (TBD) November

The World Curling Federation will cover all travel, accommodation and incidental costs for trainees.

Expected profile of applicants:

  • You were born between 25 January 1988 and 24 January 2006.
  • Your minimum level of education is a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • You have excellent understanding, speaking and writing skills in English.
  • You have a strong interest in sport.
  • You are ready to travel abroad independently and work in an international, multicultural environment.
  • You are a team player, but you can also work independently.
  • You are ready to work under time-pressure and are able to prioritise among tasks in a fast-paced environment. 
  • You are open to receiving guidance and feedback from your mentors and others in the team.

The selection committee will apply the following principles during the selection process as much as possible:

  • Gender balance
  • Geographical balance

How to apply?

Photographer

Along with their application, photographers must submit a portfolio of ten sports images and state why they decided to select these photos.

Communications Assistants

Communications Assistants must deliver two tasks:

1 – Submit a 400 to 600-word essay on one of the following topics:

  • How sport impacts your life
  • How sport can impact the world

2 – Create an Instagram reel between 7-15 seconds promoting the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2023 in Gangneung, Korea from 22-29 April 2023.

In the reel, use the video assets provided, include the dates, full name of the championship, location and event logo.

Write a caption including the event hashtag #WMDCC. Explain your selection process on the following: text, colours, editing style, footage and music selection. You can find the assets here.
