World Curling Athlete Commission expansion

At its December 2023 meeting, the World Curling Federation Board approved the expansion of its Athlete Commission.

The expansion will come into effect at the next elections of the Commission in May 2024.

The number of members on the Athlete Commission will now increase from six to ten.

The increase will add a mixed doubles position and wheelchair position to ensure gender balance representation for those disciplines. The expansion will also add a male and female representative from the World Curling Team Rankings.

Therefore, the composition of the Athlete Commission shall represent the following:

  • Two female athletes from the world women’s championships or women’s competition at the Olympic Games;
  • Two male athletes from the world men’s championships or men’s competition at the Olympic Games;
  • Two athletes (one male and one female) from the world mixed doubles championships or mixed doubles competition at the Olympic Games;
  • Two athletes (one male and one female) from the world wheelchair championships and world wheelchair mixed doubles championships;
  • Two athletes (one male and one female) who are ranked inside the top 25 at the end of the season on the World Curling Team Ranking System.

Additionally, one athlete at-large position is available to be filled through appointment, if there are deficiencies in skillsets or regional composition that should be balanced.

Along with the expansion, the voting database of the Athlete Commission has been defined as well.

Any athlete who has represented their Member Association in a world “A” championship or Olympic/Paralympic Games in the prior five years in the women’s, men’s, mixed doubles or wheelchair curling discipline are eligible to vote.

Furthermore, any athlete who has represented their Member Association at the Pan Continental Championships’ A or B-Division, the European Championships’ A, B or C-Division, the world mixed doubles championship, the World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event or at the world wheelchair championship’s B-Division in the prior five years are eligible to vote, along with women’s, men’s and mixed doubles athletes who are ranked inside the top 25 at the end of the season on the World Curling Team Ranking System.

These changes will help improve the Athlete Commission’s productivity and improve its reach.
