United States win Pan Continental bronze

United States women beat Canada by 8-7, after a measure in an extra end, to claim the Pan Continental bronze medals.

The Americans opened with a score of two in the first end, but Canada clawed their way back with a single score in the second end and a steal of one in the third to level the game.

After the sixth end the score was tied at 4-4.  The Americans then blanked the seventh end and, in the eighth, United States skip Tabitha Peterson had a straightforward draw to score two points and take a 6-4 lead.

Canada responded in the ninth when their skip Kerri Einarson made a triple take out, to score three points and take a 7-6 lead.

In a dramatic tenth end, Canada’s Einarson cleared out two American stones on her last, leaving Peterson with a draw to the button to level the game at 7-7 and force an extra end.

In the extra end, Einarson needed to draw to the four-foot, but came up short after determined by a measure, giving United States the stolen point needed for their 8-7 victory.

“We’re very excited about that and happy to finish off the event with a win,” said Peterson. “In the extra, we were just hoping that we would make them play their last one. We played that game after a tough one last night. We had to re-group, make our shots and put the pressure on the other team.”

United States bronze medal team: Tabitha Peterson (skip), Cory Thiesse (third), Tara Peterson (second), Becca Hamilton (lead), supported by alternate Vicky Persinger and coach Cathy Overton-Clapham.

Meanwhile, in the sole B-Division semi-final, Jamaica beat Brazil by 10-5 to go on to face China in the final, with the winner of that game gaining promotion to next season’s A-Division.
