Pan Continental Curling Championships 2022 A-Division line-ups amended

Australia men and New Zealand women have been added to the Pan Continental Curling Championships 2022 A-Division, replacing Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei respectively.

This change comes after a review uncovered that an error had been made in the ranking system used to select the initial teams to replace China in the A-Division championships.

Once the issue was corrected and the world ranking system was implemented for the championships, Australia men and New Zealand women were promoted to the A-Division, while Kazakhstan men’s and Chinese Taipei women’s teams will compete in the B-Division.

Team replacement policy

The correct policy for team replacement is detailed in the “Competition Policy & Procedure Manual (Sept 2022)” whereby the World Curling Federation outlines on page 22:

“…The procedure for replacing Member Associations at WCF events

Should a Member Association (MA) be unable to compete at a World Curling Federation event, due to the pandemic, disciplinary sanctions, travel restrictions, etc., the MA will be replaced by the highest ranked team from the previously completed edition of a qualifying championship or lower division. If there is no completed qualification event, world ranking will be used:

PCCC-A – the next highest MA from the previous PCCC-B would be promoted

PCCC-B – as long as there is no C-Division, play with fewer MAs”

There has been no “previously completed edition of a qualifying championship or lower division”, therefore the World Ranking should have been used.
