People’s Republic of China qualify for wheelchair mixed doubles semi-final

A single wheelchair mixed doubles curling draw was held in the Paralympic Winter Games on Saturday. In this session, People’s Republic of China picked up their fifth win and secured a place in the semi-finals.

Team China continued their strong campaign when they played 2025 world bronze medallists, Estonia. Team China were leading the game, 6-1, at half-time, and eventually won, 12-2, in seven ends. This means that Team China kept their undefeated record intact and became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.

Afterwards, Team China’s Wang Meng said, “I’m very happy that we secured a spot in the semi-final! Today we played better than Estonia.”

This was Estonia’s third loss of the competition and they are now in tied fourth place with two wins and three losses.

2025 world champions, Japan met Great Britain, both teams looking for their third win. Great Britain stole two in the second when Japan’s Ogawa Aki was unsuccessful with her tap attempt, which resulted in a 4-0 British lead. They went on to steal in the next three ends for an 8-0 lead after five. After putting three more points on the board with Power Play in the seventh, the Brits won, 11-2, in seven ends.

Great Britain are now in joint second place (3W-2L), while Japan are joint fourth (2W-3L).

Republic of Korea and United States of America were also on a won two, lost two record ahead of their game against each other. Team Korea started with a steal of three in the first end when United States’ Laura Dwyer came up short with her last draw. Korea put another three-point score on the board in the fourth for 7-1 at half time. Team Korea stole three further points in the following two ends, which made United States concede the game with a 10-1 final result after six.

Afterwards, Baek Hyejin said, “Today the key was our teamwork. He [Lee Yongsuk] played an outstanding game and we kept our momentum going the entire time.”

Team Korea now share second place on the standings with Great Britain, while United States are in joint fourth place.

In the final game of the session, hosts Italy met 2023 world champions Latvia, both teams willing to score their second win. Latvia were leading 5-3 after four ends. They scored two on their Power Play in the sixth and stole single points in the last two ends for a 9-4 victory.

Latvia are now in joint fourth position (2W-3L), while Italy are at the bottom of the table (1W-4L).

On Sunday, wheelchair mixed doubles curling action continues with one draw in the Cortina Olympic Stadium.
