Norway steal their way to first victory at Olympic Winter Games

In Friday afternoon’s sixth mixed doubles round-robin session, Norway secured their first win so far of the competition with a 9-0 victory against Sweden.

Sweden had last stone advantage in the first end, but Isabella Wranaa’s last-stone tap-back was too weak, handing Norway an opening steal of one point. After this, Norway followed up with steal after steal — including a steal of three in the third end and two more in the fifth to win the game by 9-0 in just six ends — without ever having the last stone advantage themselves.

This win keeps Norway’s play-off hopes alive as they share seventh place on the table with Estonia. Meanwhile, this was a third successive loss for Sweden, who now sit in sixth place.

Speaking later about stealing every end, Norway’s Magnus Nedregotten said, “I’m a little surprised I have to say. They are two of the best players in the world. Our energy today was a bit higher and we decided that energy was the key word. So, we’re delighted about getting that win.”

Kristin Skaslien acknowledged the importance of that win and said, “We can’t afford any more losses, so we’ll be taking one step at a time.”

The pair were asked about playing together as a married couple, especially when things aren’t going well, and Kristin said, “In this game we were a little bit more aggressive in our communication between ourselves.

“We’re married, so we know to just get the feelings out there and move on. I think we benefitted from being that bit more aggressive there, actually.”

This was the last session of curling before the official opening ceremony.

About this Kristin said, “We’re excited about the opening ceremony. We’re going to join the parade, I think that’s a big part of being at the Olympics.”

In their game against Estonia, Italy held a substantial 6-2 lead after five ends. But it goes to show there is no such thing as a comfortable lead in mixed doubles when Estonia started to battle back.

Marie Kaldvee scored one point with a tap-back in the sixth and then her team stole a single point in the seventh end when Stefania Constantini’s take-out attempt couldn’t remove the counter stone.

This reduced the Italy lead to 6-4, but Italy scored one more in the eighth to win by 7-4. This result puts the Italians in joint third place with Canada, who were not scheduled in this session.

After the game, Italy’s Amos Mosaner said, “After the loss yesterday, it was good to come back this morning first and then this afternoon with two wins on the board. We are still working on our performance and will come back stronger tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Stefania Constantini said, “I think the field is really good here, the level is growing year by year. That makes for a really good battle, but we will enjoy it!”

Great Britain produced a strong performance in their game against the Republic of Korea and held a 5-1 lead at the fourth-end break. A steal of two in the fifth and a further single steal in the sixth was enough to complete the 8-2 win, and Republic of Korea conceded in the seventh end. In contrast to Britain’s five wins, Korea are still looking for their first.

United States of America dominated their game against Czechia, leading 5-0 after three ends. This was partly thanks to a steal of three in the second end when a tap-back attempt by Czechia’s Julie Zelingrova was not successful. United States of America remain unbeaten while Czechia are still looking for their first win.
