Great Britain own top ranking spot at Olympic Winter Games
After Friday morning’s fifth mixed doubles round-robin session, Great Britain moved into a clear lead at the top of the rankings. They now sit with a won four, lost none record thanks to their 7-4 win over Sweden.
The British duo put their mark on their game against Sweden in the early ends. Jennifer Dodds opened the scoring with a nerveless draw inside four lying Swedish counting stones to pick up a single point. In the second end, Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa came up short with her final draw to hand Great Britain a steal of three points and a 4-0 lead.

In the third end, Wranaa was again short with her final draw to open Sweden’s scoring with just two points rather than more, much to the relief of the British duo. Sweden then closed the gap to 3-4 with a single steal in the fourth when Great Britain’s Dodds final stone wrecked on a front guard.
Great Britain then took control of the second half of the game, scoring two in the fifth end for a 6-3 lead, while Sweden could only respond with a single point in the sixth. Great Britain took a single point in the seventh end to improve their lead to 7-3, and then ran Sweden out of stones in the eighth, securing their fourth table-topping victory so far.

After this game, Bruce Mouat said, “We’re definitely in a good spot. We’ve got 4-0 and that was the best game that we’ve put together so far and we’re building momentum. We’ve got a tough game against Korea in a couple of hours so we’re just going to try and re-group and come out firing again.”
With the British pair going so well, and curling being the one of the only sport in action at the Games so far, their performances have been top of the sports bulletins in the British media.
When asked about that, Jennifer Dodds said, “I’m just really glad that curling’s getting centre stage. If curling’s the number one story, that means that curling is getting known and that’s what I love to hear.
“We love curling and we just want everyone to fall in love with it like we are. If the UK is (in love with curling), then I want that to continue.”

In the other games, Italy came onto the ice to face Switzerland, having suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Canada in their previous game yesterday. They made amends straightaway, and although Stefania Constantini was short with her draw in the first end, they still opened with three points.
Switzerland responded with a three of their own in the second end, but a score of four in the fourth and steals of three and two points after that allowed the Italians to claim a 12-4 win in just six ends.

United States of America faced Canada in this session, and the Americans emerged as 7-5 winners, aided by a score of three in the seventh end when they called their power-play.
After the game, American national coach Phill Drobnick was full of praise for his team: “We’ve really tried to stay focussed on our processes and Cory and Korey have done a great job on that. Korey Dropkin played great today — he was spot-on.”

The American performance was witnessed by American superstar rapper Snoop Dogg, and there was plenty of razzmatazz that came along with his appearance. When asked about whether that was a distraction, Korey Dropkin said, “It’s not always easy to stay focussed. Being mindful of when you need to lock it back in is so important.”
