Four mixed doubles semi-finalists confirmed at Olympic Winter Games
Results from Sunday evening’s twelfth session of mixed doubles round-robin action confirm the four teams that will now go forward to the semi-finals.
Italy, Sweden and United States of America joined the already-qualified Great Britain duo. However, the final rankings will not be confirmed until after Monday’s thirteenth and last round-robin session.
United States of America faced Sweden, and Sweden got off to a strong start when Isabella Wranaa targeted her last stone in off a winger to open the scoring with three points. However, the Americans responded straight away in the second when good build-up play that split the house allowed Cory Thiesse to draw for three points and level the game.

Sweden scored one in the third end, but the Americans scored another three in the fourth end through a tap-back by Thiesse, giving United States of America a 6-4 lead.
The Americans added a single-point steal in the fifth then, using their Power Play, Sweden scored two in the sixth when Isabella Wranaa played a raise. When Thiesse missed a take-out in the seventh, Sweden carved out a single steal to level the game at 7-7. Eventually, in the eighth end, Sweden could not apply pressure and the Americans scored one point to win by 8-7.
This win puts United States of America into the semi-finals on a won six, lost two record, and, despite their loss, Sweden joined them. United States of America still has one more round-robin game to play on Monday morning.
After this win, a delighted Cory Thiesse said, “We’re just pleased to get there, it’s been what we’ve worked for. Mainly we feel that it is a privilege to be in this position — it’s a privilege to represent our country and to play in front of our friends and family.”

Great Britain, who have already qualified, faced defending Olympic champions Italy in this session, and the Italians opened with a score of two in the first end. Early strong Italian play meant that Stefania Constantini threw away her last stone for fear of messing up a strong position.
Great Britain responded in the second end when Jennifer Dodds drew her last stone to score three, securing a 3-2 lead.
In the third end, Italy’s Constantini once again threw away her last stone, but this time Italy only scored one point, to tie the game at 3-3.

Great Britain scored one in the fourth end, and stole one in the fifth for a 5-3 lead, but in the sixth, Constantini was able to draw for three points to give Italy a 6-5 lead. Great Britain called their Power Play in the seventh end and eventually Dodds was able to play a nose-hit to score three points and move onto an 8-6 lead.
British stones were spread around the house in the eighth and Constantini could not find a way to score, giving up a steal of one and handing Great Britain a 9-6 win.
This eighth win for the British duo guarantees them first place on the rankings and last stone advantage through the play-off games.

Speaking afterwards about finishing in top spot, Bruce Mouat said, “It’s what we wanted and we’ve been working a long time for that. We’re very pleased to be in the semi-finals and hopefully we can start off again tomorrow with the hammer.”
Speaking specifically about the game, Jennifer Dodds said, “We knew it was going to be tough — they’re the Olympic and world champions, so we knew we had to improve our game from this morning.
“We lost a two in the first end but bounced back well with a three in the second. That was definitely a step up from this morning’s game.”

Despite this loss, Italy now join the semi-final line-up.
In the other two games of this session, Korea beat Canada by 9-5 to record a third win overall, and Norway beat Switzerland by 6-3.
