Italy have dream start at Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games

Reigning gold medallists Italy — consisting of Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner — started the defence of their Olympic title in Thursday morning’s session of mixed doubles round-robin play at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games with an 8-4 win over Republic of Korea.

After giving up last stone advantage and losing one point to the Koreans in the opening end, chants of ‘Italia, Italia, Italia’ echoed around the stadium from the large home-based crowd. This spurred the Italian team to push forward and move into a comfortable 6-1 lead by halfway. They scored one point in the second end to level, then stole two points in the third end when Korea’s Kim Seonyeong was short with her final draw. Italy then added another steal of three in the fourth end.

The Italians controlled the game after this and the sixth end saw a typical Italian play when Mosaner had a hefty-weight clear-out, leaving Constantini to play a gentle tap to score two points from the end and move onto an 8-2 lead.

Korea’s Kim then drew her final stone into a busy house in the seventh to score two points and reduce the Italian lead to 8-4. This was the last score of the game, as the Korean team conceded, to give a final score of 8-4.

After the game, Itay’s Amos Mosaner said, “It was really amazing here with all the fans in the stands. We heard a lot of ‘Italia, Italia, Italia’ and it was really nice to have them here.”

He added, “There was special pressure on us because this was our first game. We tried to play well as we can and give 100% in the game. Our draws were good and our take-outs were very good.”

His teammate Stefania Constantini agreed, saying “It was special and hearing the crowd today made it even more special.”

Talking about the game itself, she added, “We had a big fight there, but we can improve on some details — we know that for sure, but today we did good.”

In this session, Sweden beat Czechia by 7-4. The fourth game of this draw saw the United States of America open their campaign with an 8-6 win over Norway, who have now suffered two losses.
