Armenia joins World Curling as first Associate Member
World Curling is pleased to welcome Armenia as the first Associate Member, specialising in wheelchair curling.
The Wheelchair Curling Federation of Armenia was founded in 2022 by Arshak Oganesyan Sisakovich. Sisakovich started wheelchair curling after both of his legs were amputated due to wounds sustained during military service.
Currently, the federation has a team of ten people who are ready to train at a local ice rink regularly. They even made two of their own curling stones from local granite.
In November, they participated in their first international event in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Beau Welling, World Curling President, said, “We are excited to welcome Armenia Wheelchair Curling as World Curling’s inaugural Associate Member.
“The Associate Member status was approved at the most recent World Curling Congress to allow more specialised Member Associations to join and utilise the available resources to develop and compete internationally.”
Arshak Oganesyan Sisakovich, Wheelchair Curling Federation of Armenia President, said, “Losing my legs didn’t take away my dream. Today, I want every person with a disability in Armenia to know that they have a chance to go out on the ice, feel the team spirit and taste victory.
“Wheelchair curling is a path from isolation to an active life.”
An Associate Member is defined as a group working in the interests of the sport, recognised by national authorities and present clear evidence as why they are unable to comply with the terms for Conditional, Provisional or Full Membership.
