Sweden to play Switzerland for men’s European gold

Sweden will face Switzerland in Saturday’s men’s final of the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2025, following two engrossing and competitive semi-finals.

Switzerland versus Italy

Switzerland faced Italy in their semi-final and, in the eighth end the score was tied at 5-5. Then, Italy skip Joel Retornaz had a chance to score six, but his hit missed the target Swiss stone, and gave up a steal of one point to hand Switzerland a 6-5 lead after an umpire’s measure.

In the tenth end, Italy led by 7-6, but the Swiss held last stone advantage and their fourth player Benoit Schwarz-Van Berkel drew his final stone into position, tapping out an Italian stone. This shot scored two points, won Switzerland the game by 8-7, and put his team into the gold medal final.

After the game, Switzerland skip Yannick Schwaller said, “Throwing-wise, I think we’re going very well, not a lot of bad throws out there.”

He admitted, “We’ve made a couple of mistakes with line calls and weights, and that’s what we want to change for the final, just to get calm.”

Scotland versus Sweden

The other semi-final was a rematch of the 2022 Olympic final, with current world champions Scotland playing current Olympic champions Sweden.

When this tight game reached the ninth end, the score was tied at 5-5. Sweden skip Niklas Edin then played a hit out on the wing of the house to score two points and take a 7-5 lead.

In the tenth end, Scotland skip Bruce Mouat attempted a run-back double take-out, but this was unsuccessful. The Scots gave up a steal of one and Sweden won the game by 8-5 to proceed to the final.

For skip Edin, this will be a twelfth final appearance and a chance to win an eighth European gold medal.

After the game he said, “We’ve played them a million times before, but we were really well focussed coming into the game, with the right mindset.”

He added, “I think we just have to recharge our own top level — I think we played better today than we have for the whole week so far.”
