Team Edin win gold at Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2025

It took to an extra end, but Sweden beat Switzerland by 5-4 to win men’s gold at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2025 on Saturday afternoon, completing a golden Swedish double for the first time since 2019.

For the Swiss, this had been a chance to take a first European gold since 2013, but for Sweden’s skip Niklas Edin, it was an eighth European title.

Sweden secured a single steal in the opening end and by the sixth, after a series of blank ends, the Swedes led by 2-0. Then Switzerland’s fourth player Benoit Schwarz-Van Berkel played a draw to score one point and reduce the Swedish lead to 2-1.

In the seventh end, Sweden’s skip Niklas Edin took out a Swiss stone to score one point and increase his team’s lead to 3-1. Then in the eighth end, Switzerland’s Schwarz-Van Berkel played a hit to score another single point and reduce the Swedish lead again, this time to 3-2.

In the ninth end, Sweden’s Edin had a chance to score two, but with his take-out he was only able to score one point, moving his lead on to 4-2.

In the tenth end, Switzerland’s Schwarz-Van Berkel was finally able to score two points with a take-out, to level the game at 4-4 and force an extra end.

Sweden had last stone advantage in the extra end and Sweden’s Edin took out two Swiss stones leaving another of his own stones to score the one point needed for Sweden’s 5-4 win.

After his historic win, Niklas Edin said, “It feels amazing to be honest. We’ve been pretty cold these last couple of years.

“We’ve been unintentionally slowing things down and felt that we haven’t had the same level. I think this week was important for us to find the confidence to play well against the top teams.”

He added, “We had a better start and then we had to stay focussed and not make many mistakes.”

Looking forward, he said, “This is pretty good timing. We’re in really good form, so things will be looking interesting for the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s skip Yannick Schwaller said, “We had a great chance in the first end, but that was a big mistake right away. The two came too late — we all know the stats in extra ends. We tried to be patient, but they had an answer for everything.”
