After her win over Norway, Swedish skip Anna Hasselborg said, “We got a deuce in the eighth and that was big in the game. We were really comfortable out there. That was a pressure game and I think we rose to the occasion.”

Looking forward, she added, “Winning this would mean that we’re doing something right, and I think we are.”

With two wins on Tuesday, Denmark now joins Norway on five wins and two losses. The Danes followed up a morning 9-3 win over Germany by beating Lithuania by 8-4.

Speaking after her win over Germany, Danish skip Madeleine Dupont said, “That felt really good. I expected a really close game, but we were in control throughout. Now, we need to get a couple more wins.”

Men’s competition

Despite the sickness-enforced absence of skip Bruce Mouat, Scotland maintained their unbeaten record with six wins, securing a 7-4 victory over Norway to stand alone at the top of the rankings.

For this game, regular third Grant Hardie took on skip duties and alternate Kyle Waddell slotted in at third.

Norway held a 2-1 lead as the teams played the third end. Replacement Scottish skip Grant Hardie then played a run-back take-out to score two points and take the lead, at 3-2. The Scots then stayed ahead and went on to win by 7-4 in nine ends.

After the game, replacement skip Hardie said, “We were under extra pressure with Bruce not in the line-up. I think we were just trying to focus on topping the round robin and another good win keeps us on track for that.”

The Scots are confident Mouat will return for the rest of the round-robin programme.

Elsewhere, Italy and Sweden stayed on the heels of the Scots — Sweden defeated Poland by 8-4 while Italy beat Denmark by 7-5. These two teams now share second place on the standings, on five wins and one loss.

By the ninth end of their game against Poland, the Swedes held a 6-4 lead. Swedish skip Niklas Edin then played a hit to score two more points and secure an 8-4 lead. Poland then conceded.

Afterwards, Edin said, “We weren’t playing perfect there by any means, but we knew we were playing at a high enough level so that if we’re not doing something silly, or missing too much too early, we’ve got it under control.”

In the sixth end of their game against Denmark, Italy were ahead by 4-3. Then skip Joel Retornaz played a hit to score two more points and improve his team’s lead to 6-3. By the tenth end, Italy still led by 6-5, and Retornaz then played a draw to score one more point and win the game by 7-5.

After this win Retornaz said, “That was a good game — we had a few mistakes here and there but overall, a good game. I’m happy with the way the team is playing, I’m happy with the way I’m playing — we’re solid out there.”
