Scotland and Italy first to qualify for men’s play-offs

Scotland skip Bruce Mouat returned from illness to lead his team to an 11-4 win over Sweden that keeps his team’s unbeaten record going and guarantees the Scots top spot in the play-offs. The morning session saw, in Mouat’s absence, Grant Hardie skip the Scots to a 7-2 win over Poland.

Behind the Scots, Italy became the second team to qualify for the play-offs after their game against Switzerland, despite their 8-9 loss.

Curling is a game of fine margins, and even though both teams now sit on six wins and two losses, the Italians are the ones to qualify first after all possible scenarios were calculated and it was found there were still scenarios where Switzerland’s play-off fate would come down to draw shot challenge.

In their morning games, Italy were 6-4 winners over Sweden and Switzerland beat Denmark by 9-3.

Germany claimed two wins to keep themselves in semi-final contention, beating Austria by 8-2 and then following that up with a 7-3 win over Norway.

Czechia sit in sixth place on the table. They beat Norway 6-4 in their morning game before facing Poland.

By the sixth end, the Czechs led 5-2. Their skip Lukas Klima then played a run-back take-out to score another three points and improve his team’s lead to 8-2. Czechia went on to win 9-2.

At the foot of the table, Denmark faced Austria.

The Austrians held a narrow upper hand throughout this game, but the score was tied at 4-4 going into the tenth end. Austrian skip Mathias Genner had last stone in this end and played a draw, but he got it wrong and gave up a steal of two, handing Denmark a 6-4 win.

Women’s competition

With one round-robin session to go, only Sweden are assured of a place in the women’s semi-finals, with six other teams still capable of joining them.

Sweden played Lithuania in Wednesday’s only women’s session, knowing they had already qualified. In the third end, with the Swedes already ahead by 2-1, skip Anna Hasselborg was able to draw her final stone into position to score five points and secure a 7-1 lead. Sweden went on to win by 9-3 in just six ends, assuring themselves of number one position for the knock-out stage.

In this session, Italy played Denmark. In the tenth end, Denmark led by 5-4 when Italy skip Stefania Constantini played a double take-out to score two points and win the game 6-5. This result means that both Denmark and Italy remain in the semi-final picture — Denmark with five wins and Italy with four.

Denmark will now play Sweden in their last game, while Italy face Czechia.

Switzerland played Czechia and the Czechs led by 4-2 as they played the seventh end. However, Swiss skip Corrie Huerlimann then played a draw to score three points and take a 5-4 lead. Eventually, Switzerland won 7-5 to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Scotland faced Norway, and in the eighth end, the Scots led by 5-4. Scottish fourth player Rebecca Morrison then scored two more points with a hit, to improve her team’s lead to 7-4. The Scots went on to win 8-5, meaning both teams still have a semi-final place in their sights.

Türkiye played Germany in the fifth game of this session and by the ninth end, Germany held a 4-2 lead. Their fourth player Kim Sutor then scored one more point with a raise take-out to increase the German lead to 5-2. Germany went on to win 5-3.

After this win, German skip Sara Messenzehl said, “That win was really important for the Worlds. We just struggled a bit in the middle of the week, so it was important.

“That game was really clean for us, so it was a good one. We play Scotland now, so it’s going to be a ‘little final’ for World qualification.”
