China’s Team Wang top podium at Pan Continental
China defeated defending champions Canada by 7-6 in Sunday evening women’s final of the US Steel Pan Continental Curling Championships.
With new world qualification arrangements in place from next season, this means that China have won the last-ever game at the superseded Pan Continental Championship.

Stolen end turning point
By the sixth end, Canada had built a 3-2 lead when China’s Wang Rui played a hit for two to take a 4-3 lead. In the next end, Canada’s Rachel Homan was trying to score two, but her stone caught a guard on the way in and instead gave up a steal of one point to China, to let them increase their lead to 5-3.
Closing ends
In the ninth end, China led by 5-4 when Wang played a draw to score two points and increase her team’s lead again, to 7-4. In the tenth end, Canada’s Homan had no option but to attempt a triple raise, but failed, and could only score two points. This meant that China won by 7-6, to take the title.

China’s Wang said, “I’m very, very happy. We had no worries (in the tenth end) because our rocks were in the right position, so we were confident. We’ve been happy to be here. We’ve played together and supported each other, so Team China is very strong now.”
Meanwhile, Canada’s Homan said, “I thought we had a good game and made a ton of shots. We were right there to the end, but they played amazing. We made some mistakes and they were too costly.”
China: Wang Rui (skip), Han Yu (vice-skip), Dong Ziqi (second), Jiang Jiayi (lead), Su Tingyu (alternate).
Canada: Rachel Homan (skip), Tracy Fleury (vice-skip), Emma Miskew (second), Sarah Wilkes (lead), Rachelle Brown (alternate).
In the women’s B Division, Philippines beat Kazakhstan by 11-2 to take gold medals, while Hong Kong China beat Puerto Rico by 11-3 to take bronze.
