Final NOCs qualify for Olympic Qualification Event 2025
The final three National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to secure their spots in the men’s and women’s field at the Olympic Qualification Event (OQE) 2025 in Kelowna, British Columbia in December have been confirmed.
This week, the Pre-Olympic Qualification Event 2025 took place at Curl Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland where seven women’s and men’s teams had their final chance to advance and move one step closer to qualifying for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
After five days of competition, Czechia, Germany and Australia will progress in the women’s field, and Philippines, Poland and New Zealand will progress in the men’s.
Qualification games
As per the competition format, the teams to place top of the table after their gender’s respective round robin were the first to qualify their NOCs for the OQE.
In the men’s competition, and after completing the round robin with six wins and no losses, Philippines confirmed their progression.
In the women’s competition, it was Czechia who confirmed their spot at the OQE, also with six wins and no losses.
After finishing second place in the men’s round robin, New Zealand (5-1) faced third place Poland (4-2) for the next available qualification. By the eighth end, New Zealand were 5-2 leaders, but in the ninth, Poland scored four to force in front. Both teams scored one more point, but it was Poland who secured the second qualification spot with a 7-6 win.
New Zealand had their final chance to qualify and were successful when they beat Denmark (3-3) who placed fourth after the round robin. New Zealand gave a strong performance, finishing their last game with a score of 7-1 after eight ends.
Germany (5-1) placed second on the women’s round robin table, and they faced third placed Hungary (3-3) for the second qualification spot. The score was level 7-7 in the ninth end, but Germany clawed back the lead and secured the 9-7 win in the tenth and final end by scoring two.
Hungary went on the face Australia (3-3) — who had placed fourth in the round robin — to play for the final OQE spot. By the fourth end, Hungary were 5-1 leaders, however Australia gained momentum, and over five ends scored six points, finishing the game 7-4 winners and securing the final qualification spot.
