University of Saskatchewan brush and foam impact study results released

In Spring 2025, two experiments were conducted at Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Canada by the University of Saskatchewan to evaluate the different effects of knife versus standard brushing on curling ice, and of rigid black foam versus softer white foam.

The results of the research have now been published and can be found here.

Funded by World Curling, this research was conducted in conjunction with the Sweep Testing exercise that took place at the Morris Curling Club facility in Manitoba, Canada.

This test was commissioned following challenges reported over the 2024–2025 season due to the over effectiveness of several brush head constructions, and resulted in the amendment of the sweeping equipment compliance regulations for the Olympic Season. More information about the Sweep Testing exercise can be found here.
