Medal games confirmed at World Mixed Doubles and World Seniors 2025

Italy will play Scotland for gold medals and the world title at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2025 on Saturday 3 May. Meanwhile, Australia will face Estonia in the bronze medal game. To reach the final, Scotland beat Australia by 9-6 while Italy were 7-6 extra end winners over Estonia.

In the World Senior Curling Championships 2025, both the women’s and men’s gold medal games will see Canada take on Scotland.

Mixed doubles

Australia v Scotland

In the game between Australia and Scotland, the Australians led by 3-1 in the fourth end until Scotland’s Jennifer Dodds played a double take-out to score a game-changing five points and take a 6-3 lead into the break.

By the seventh end, Scotland led by 7-4 when Australia’s Tahli Gill played a double raise take-out to score two points and reduce the Scottish lead to just one point. After this, Scotland went on to win by 9-6 to claim their place in the gold medal game.

Afterwards, Scotland’s Bruce Mouat said, “I’m elated. We struggled a wee bit this week at some points, but the last three or four days we’ve had some really incredible performances to get to this point. I’m excited to be in another final tomorrow.”

And about her score of five, Jennifer Dodds, said, “They left their stone in the perfect spot for us to capitalise on it. I thought I was tight out the hand and Bruce said ’I don’t think you are’ and he was right.”

Italy v Estonia

In the other semi-final, Italy held a 6-5 lead as Estonia played the last stone of the eighth end. Marie Kaldvee had a tap-up attempt to score two points to win, but her stone caught a front guard on the way in. After an umpire’s measure, Estonia could only score one point, to tie the game at 6-6 and force an extra end.

In that extra end, Italy’s Stefania Constantini played a draw onto the button to score one point, win the game at 7-6, and secure Italy’s place in the gold medal final.

After the game, Constantini said, “That was a good battle. We had to have a really good performance and I’m really proud of us. We managed the tension really well and it’s fun like this.”

Meanwhile her partner Amos Mosaner added, “Game by game, we try to do our best. This time we had a really tight battle with Estonia, they played really great. I think in the end we managed the ice, and there were a couple of terrific shots by Stefania, really fantastic shots. That was a big win for sure.”

Estonia will now play Australia for bronze medals.

Fifth/sixth place decider

Earlier in the day, Scotland beat the United States by 7-5 to reach the semi-finals, while Estonia beat Canada, also by 7-5.

This meant that United States and Canada came back onto the ice for a fifth/sixth place decider. This game was tied at 3-3 in the fifth end when Cory Thiesse played a tap take-out to score three points and earn United States a 6-3 lead. The Americans went on to win 8-4 to claim fifth place on the rankings, while Canada finished sixth.

Relegation games

There were two relegation games earlier in the day. In these, Denmark beat Türkiye by 9-0 to stay in next season’s A-Division, while Türkiye are relegated to the World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event 2025. The other game saw Czechia win against China by 7-5 and therefore they also stay in the A-Division while China are relegated.

Seniors

The gold medal games in both the women’s and men’s World Senior Curling Championships 2025 will see Canada play against Scotland.

In the women’s event, Canada beat United States by 9-5 in the quarter-finals, before winning by 9-4 over Ireland in the semi-finals. Ireland had been 8-3 winners over Finland in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the Scots beat Denmark by 12-2 in the quarter-finals before going onto beat Japan in the semi-finals by 6-3. Japan had earlier beaten Switzerland by 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

While Canada and Scotland battle it out for gold medals and the title, Ireland and Japan will play for bronze.

In the men’s championship, Scotland were comfortable 10-1 winners over United States in the semi-finals, after having beaten Switzerland by 8-3 in the quarter-finals. Canada beat Finland by 6-3 in their semi-final, after beating Germany by 6-5 in the quarter-finals.

United States and Finland will now play for bronze medals, as Canada and Scotland compete for gold and the world title.
