Italy crowned World Mixed Doubles Champions

Italy beat Scotland by 9-4 in Saturday afternoon’s gold medal final to win their first Mixed Doubles medals and world title, to now sit alongside their Olympic crown.

To reach the final, Italy had beaten Estonia by 7-6 in the semi-finals, while Scotland were 9-6 winners over Australia.

In the second end, with Italy leading by 1-0, Scotland’s Jennifer Dodds played a hit on an Italian stone to score one point and level the game at 1-1.

In the fourth end, Italy held a 2-1 lead when Scotland’s Jennifer Dodds came up short with her draw attempt, to give up a steal of two that extended Italy’s lead to 4-1. In the fifth end, a tap-up attempt by Scotland’s Dodds over-curled and left a Italian stone lying shot, to hand Italy a steal of one more point and a lead of 5-1.

In the sixth end, the Scots managed to spread stones around the house and eventually, Dodds had an open draw into the house to score three and get themselves right back into the game, reducing Italy’s lead to 5-4.

In the seventh end, Italy’s Amos Mosaner cleared out three Scottish stone early in the end, to let his partner Stefania Constantini play a lengthy run-back to knock out another Scottish stone and score four points. With the Italians now ahead by 9-4, the Scots conceded.

The Italians completed this campaign by winning all eleven games in their programme — just as they had done when they took their Olympic title.

After this win, Amos Mosaner spoke about the seventh end, “We were playing really good in the centre of the sheet. And Stefania then makes a fantastic run-back… amazing.”

Speaking more generally about their partnership, Stefania Constantini said, “We really enjoy playing together like this. We have great team-work together. We are working for every win, every stone, and we’re communicating well.”

Meanwhile, silver medallist Bruce Mouat said, “Obviously, we’re disappointed, but it was a good effort for us to get to the final again. We’ll de-brief in the coming weeks and figure what it was that made us play so well — we’ll try to bring that to next year.”

Reflecting on her performance, Jennifer Dodds said, “I think if we’d been playing the way we were playing in the last couple of days it would have been a really close game.”

Olympic Qualification

With this year’s championship now finished, the Olympic qualification process for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games has now finalised the eight National Olympic Associations that have qualified directly.

With Italy qualified as hosts, the other direct qualifiers are (in qualification order): Estonia, Sweden, Great Britain/Scotland, Norway, Canada, Switzerland, and United States.

Two additional places in each discipline at the Olympic Winter Games will be claimed at the Olympic Qualification Event in December 2025 in Kelowna, Canada.
