Unbeaten Korea in clear lead after Day 2

The second day of round robin at the World Wheelchairs saw England pick up their first win on this stage after 21 years. It also saw Korea win both of their games to become the only unbeaten team and lead the standings.

After two close losses on Saturday, England showed a very strong form on Sunday. In their afternoon game against United States they won by 10-1.

After their win, a delighted England skip Stewart Pimblett said, “We’ve woken up! Yesterday we were asleep, but we felt like we’ve played quite well yesterday. We just couldn’t get through the game, get the win out of it, but I think we’ve woken up now. And I’m excited for the rest of the tournament!”

Korea kept their strong form from the opening day and with two wins they kept their unbeaten record intact. In the afternoon, they had a close battle with Sweden. The teams were tied at 4-4 going into the eighth end. In that end, Korea scored a single with hammer and won, 5-4. In the evening, Korea won against Italy by 9-3 in seven ends.

Latvia also had two games on Sunday. In the morning, they had a back-and-forth match against Italy that went down to the last shot. Latvia fourth Agris Lasmans had a perfect draw into the house to score two and win, 8-7. In the evening, Latvia met Slovakia and lost that game, 2-7. This was Slovakia’s first win of the event.

Norway, in their sole game of the day, met Canada in the re-match of last year’s final. The game was tied at 4-4 after six, and went down to the last stone. Norway eventually won by 7-4 and picked up their second win of the championship.

Afterwards, their third player Geir Arne Skogstad said, “This was a nice game to win, finally we got Canada in the round robin for once! It’s always good winning games! Maybe we were a little bit better in personal skills, maybe, I don’t know. It feels like they were missing on more of their stones than we did, so maybe that factors in.”

In their only game of the day, Paralympic champions China had a 7-2 win over Slovakia to improve their record to two wins and one loss.
