Switzerland, Korea take direct semi-final places at LGT World Women’s

With all twenty sessions of round-robin play now complete, the play-off picture at the LGT World Women’s Championship is finally clear. It took until the very last games – and extra ends – on Friday evening to determine the final rankings and match-ups.

As the teams took to the ice for session twenty, the six play-off qualifiers had already been confirmed. In alphabetical order, they were Canada, China, Korea, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland. However, their final rankings—and who would face whom in the knock-out stages—depended on the evening’s results.

Switzerland and Korea earn direct semi-final spots

Switzerland, the table toppers, edged out Denmark 7-6 after an extra end to finish with an impressive 11-1 record. Their only loss came earlier in the week against Canada, but their dominant performance secured them the top ranking and a direct spot in the semi-finals.

Korea secured a direct semi-final place after an 8-7 extra end victory over United States. With ten wins and two losses, they claimed the second overall ranking and will play in the opposite semi-final from Switzerland.

Qualification Games set for Saturday morning

Canada defeated China 7-5 to lock in third place, setting up a qualification game against sixth-ranked Scotland on Saturday at 10:00. Scotland, who did not play in the final session, had already secured their place in the play-offs. Notably, they were one of only two teams to defeat Canada during the round-robin. The winner of this match will advance to the semi-final against Korea at 16:00 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sweden—playing without regular skip Anna Hasselborg—won a tight 7-6 win against Japan. That victory secured their fourth-place finish, setting up a Qualification Game against fifth-placed China. The winner of this match will go on to face Switzerland in the semi-final.

Final standings outside the play-offs

Denmark and Norway both finished with identical 5-7 records, but Denmark ranked seventh due to their 13-7 head-to-head victory over Norway, who placed eighth.

Japan and Italy also finished with the same record (4-8), with Japan taking ninth place over Italy in tenth based on their head-to-head result.

Earlier in the day, Türkiye secured two wins, defeating the United States 8-3 and Lithuania 8-2. With three wins overall, they finished in 11th place. The United States also ended with three wins but placed 12th.

Lithuania, competing in their first-ever World Women’s Curling Championship, finished 13th, unable to secure a win but gaining valuable experience on the world stage.

As the championship moves into the knock-out stage, the intensity is set to rise, with teams battling for a place in the gold medal game, and securing Olympic Qualification Points.
