World Curling Academy educates ten Ice Technicians
From 11-12 October 2024, ten participants from various curling clubs across Manitoba, Canada came together to partake in the World Curling Academy Ice Technician Course in Brandon, Manitoba.
The hands-on course covered skills required to become a qualified Ice Technician, including checking and reading ice boss blades, different cutting patterns, and pebbling and scraping the ice.
The participants, eight of which currently work for local curling clubs and two who are completely new to curling, also learnt about environmental control, as well as ice preparation for games.
Brandon Curling Club Ice Technician Terry McNamee was one of the World Curling Academy Educators and praised the practical approach to learning the ropes.

He said, “I think it’s great to have lots of on ice time and have no classroom work during the course.
“The online [theory] approach taken at your own speed means that the face-to-face course gives lots of opportunity to be on ice and ask questions.”
Mark Callan, who is a World Curling Academy educator, mentored experienced Ice Technicians, Greg Ewasko, Hans Wuthrich and Matt Rankine as they look to become World Curling Academy educators in the future.
Callan said, “It is fantastic that Curling Canada is embracing the World Curling Academy Ice Technician courses.
“The online content and the practical face to face courses provide Ice Technicians with the best opportunities to learn by doing as well as the opportunity to ask questions of the trained educators.”
