First ever World Junior Mixed Doubles Curling Championship awarded to Edmonton, Canada
The disciplines of curling continue to expand, with a new World Championship being added to the calendar in the 2024–2025 season.
The first ever World Junior Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will debut in Edmonton, Canada, at the Saville Community Sports Centre from 6 –11 May 2025.
The inaugural open-entry championship follows the success of Mixed Doubles at both the 2018 and 2022 Olympic Winter Games, as well as the Youth Olympic Games in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.
World Curling Head of Competitions, Eeva Roethlisberger said, “This is an exciting new opportunity for our junior curlers and something that our members have been asking us to investigate for some time.
“I’m pleased to be working with a local organising committee who have such strong history and pedigree within our sport and I’m certain they will do a fantastic job hosting this new event and setting a high standard for the future.”
The Saville Community Sports Centre is a 350,000 square foot multi-sport recreation facility managed and operated by the University of Alberta, where curling began in 2004. Since then, it’s hosted over 15 Curling Canada or Curling Alberta events.
“On behalf of the Host Committee, the Saville Community Sports Centre (SCSC) and the University of Alberta, we are delighted to host the inaugural World Junior Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Edmonton at the beautiful SCSC,” said Local Organising Chair, Kevin Martin. “This event brings the best junior curling talent in the world under one roof.
“Mixed Doubles is a dynamic discipline that comes to a pinnacle at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. To introduce Junior Mixed Doubles to the international stage is extremely exciting to all of us.”
“The University of Alberta’s Saville Community Sports Centre is excited to welcome the world to our state-of-art curling facility,” said Associate Director of Campus and Community Recreation, Greg Lembke. “We have a proven track record of running high-profile curling events, but this will be our first opportunity to host a World Championship. We look forward to working closely with World Curling and everyone on our organising committee, to make the first-ever World Junior Mixed Doubles Curling Championship a success.”
The format of the championship will be established once the number entries are confirmed. This event is aimed at increasing junior participation across nations and growing the number of athletes in future adult-level championships.
