World Curling members look to the future of events

During the World Curling open meetings held at the LGT World Men’s Curling Championship 2024 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, World Curling’s members took part in discussions looking to the future of curling events for the next Olympiad and beyond as part of the consultation process started by the new Events Working Group. Those present looked at all aspects of events from hosting arrangements to how to increase attendance and engagement.

The Board also announced the creation of a new Equipment Working Group to continue investigating the impact of sweeping techniques and materials on the modern game.

The meetings began on Tuesday (2 April) morning with an update from the World Curling Financial Commission on the steps taken to strengthen the financial protocols with the organisation. This was followed by a Sustainability Workshop with UK-based sustainability consultants, Sporting Giants.

Governance Changes and Upcoming Elections

Members were consulted on a variety of upcoming governance changes to the organisation that will see a new tiering system implemented for Member Associations. This system has been designed to make member support and Development Assistance Programme funding more flexible and relevant to the Member Association journey in our sport.

The Nominations Committee presented the structure and nominee timeline for the elections taking place at the Annual General Assembly in September, where three current members of the Board will reach their term limit and will be unable to stand for another term.

Events Working Group

Members were informed of the creation of a new working group focussed on evaluating every aspect of the World Curling event hosting experience and improving the offering to our stakeholders.

Members were involved in round-table discussions about the challenges and opportunities inherent in hosting World Curling events as well as discussing ways to improve the experience for all stakeholders.

The Open Meetings feature representatives from the World Curling Member Associations discussing a variety of topics and take place each year at the world championship held outside of Canada. This year there was the addition of an online webinar for those not attending the championship.
