World Junior-B Championships to begin in Lohja, Finland

The World Junior-B Curling Championships 2023 will get underway on Friday 8 December and run until Tuesday 19 December 2023 in the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland.

25 teams will compete in the women’s event and 22 teams make up the men’s field. Teams in both genders will play to qualify for the World Junior Curling Championships 2024, to be held also in Lohja from 17–24 February.

Similarly to the most recent edition of the events, the men’s and women’s competitions will take place consecutively.

Women’s competition

The women’s championship is held from Friday 8 December until Tuesday 12 December. The teams are divided into four groups: one group of seven teams and three groups of six teams.

The round-robin stage runs from 8 until 11 December and is followed by the quarter-finals at 19.00 on 11 December. The semi-finals and medal games will be held on 12 December, at 10.00 and 17.00, respectively.

Two members of Türkiye were part of the Turkish team at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2023 where they finished eighth.

Three members of the Hungarian team were also part of the team that won gold at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships B-Division 2023 in November.

It will be a 22nd appearance at a World Curling event for Latvia skip Evelina Barone.

Men’s competition

The men’s round robin will take place from 14 to 17 December. The teams are divided into three groups: one group of eight teams and two groups of seven teams.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on 18 December, at 10.00 and 17.00, respectively. The medal games will take place on 19 December at 10.00.

Czechia skip Vit Chabicovsky and Hungary skip Tatar Lorinc took part in the World Mixed Doubles Championship earlier this year, where they finished 15th and 19th, respectively.

Both of them also participated in the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, where Chabicovsky won bronze medal in the mixed doubles competition with China’s Pei Junhang.

Denmark’s Alexander Qvist participated in two World Mixed Championships—in 2017 and in 2022—, both times with his family.

Live scores from the championships can be found here.

Select games will be streamed on the Finnish Curling Association’s YouTube Channel.
