Tramadol will be prohibited in-competition from 1 January 2024

From 1 January 2024 any athlete tested in-competition may face the prospect of a ban from sport if tramadol is found in their sample.

Please refer to the Factsheet for Athletes & Athlete Support Personnel here.

Athletes who may be using tramadol are reminded to speak to their physician about seeking alternative pain medication that is permitted in sport.

If an athlete requires to use tramadol for their condition, they must ask their prescribing physician for support in submitting a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) Application.

Please refer to Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE’s) section of the WCF website for more information on the process around TUEs, who to apply to – the WCF or National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO).

The WCF would like to remind all Athletes and Athlete Support Personnel to view the latest updates to the 2024 Prohibited List, which were published by WADA on 27 September 2023.

The updated version of the 2024 Summary of Major Modifications and Explanatory Notes can be found here.
