Sweden and Switzerland reach women’s final at Le Gruyère AOP European Championships 2026
Sweden and Switzerland have reached the women’s final of the Le Gruyère AOP European Championships 2026 in Ostrava, Czechia.
After topping Group A, Switzerland faced off against Scotland, who finished second in Group B.
Following a tight game, Switzerland will play for gold on Sunday after their 4-3 victory.
Switzerland started with the opening point in the first end, before two blanked ends followed. Scotland struck back in the fourth with two points to lead at the break, before stealing another in the fifth end.
Switzerland scored one point in the sixth end to reduce the deficit, then followed that up with a single-point steal to level the scores going into the eighth end.
In that final end, following an unlucky series of events with Scotland third, Lisa Davie’s, peel attempt, Switzerland found themselves with a shot stone remarkably buried behind a guard on the button. Scotland skip, Fay Henderson tried to remove that counter, first with a difficult raise-takeout that missed by millimetres. Then with her final stone, attempted a difficult tap through a narrow port.
That attempt was also just wide, grazing the shot stone, but not removing it. This gave up a steal of one point to Switzerland and confirmed their place in the gold medal final.
On reaching the final, Switzerland skip Alina Paetz said,
“It feels very good to have reached the final, especially for the team. We’re looking forward to playing Sweden tomorrow. We know we need to play better than we did today, to make sure we go out as winners.”
In the other semi-final, Group B winners Sweden took on Latvia, who came second in Group A.
Skipped by Isabella Wranaa, Sweden progressed into Sunday’s final with a 7-3 victory.
Sweden started off brightly and scored three points in the opening end, before Latvia responded with one of their own. They traded one-point scores, with the Swedes leading 4-2 at the break.
In the fifth end, Sweden added another two points, with both sides trading singles before Sweden ran Latvia out of stones, confirming their 7-3 win and a place in the final.
Afterwards, Sweden skip Wranaa said,
“It feels amazing to reach the final, we’re super excited to play for the gold tomorrow. I felt that we were really good out there, the ice was great throughout the whole game. We found our form early in the first end and we kept on.”
Both sides will play in tomorrow’s gold medal final, which will take place at 10:00 on Sunday (1 November) morning. The men’s semi-finals take place this evening, as Italy face Czechia and Scotland take on Sweden at 18:30.
