Canada win double gold at World Senior championships
It was a golden Canadian double at the World Senior Championships as both their women’s and men’s teams won their finals.
The women beat Lithuania by 7-3, while the men took their title with a 4-3 last-stone win over United States.
Scotland’s women won bronze with a 6-3 victory over Switzerland while Sweden’s men took bronze after beating Germany by 11-9.
Women’s competition
The Canadian women took control of their final early – a steal of two in the third end gave them a 4-1 lead at the half-time break, to win with a single point in the seventh end, by 7-3.
This silver is a historic first World Curling championship medal for Lithuania.
In the bronze game, Scotland scored three in the second end to take control early. After single-point steals for the Scots in the fifth and sixth ends, they were leading by 6-2. Switzerland scored a single in the seventh end, 7-3, and then conceded the game.
The gold medal winning Canadian team are Susan Froud, third Kerry Lackie, second Kristin Turcotte and lead Julie McMullin, supported by alternate Jo-Ann Rizzo and coach Alain Corbeil.
The silver medal winning Lithuanian team are skip Virginija Paulauskaite, third Rasa Veronika Jasaitiene, second Jolanta Sulinskiene and lead Gaiva Valatkiene, supported by alternate Egle Cepulyte and coach Olga Dvojeglazova.
The bronze medal winning Scottish team are skip Karen Kennedy, third Gail Thomson, second Alison Cunningham and lead Gillian King, supported by alternate Margaret Richardson.
Men’s competition
In the men’s gold medal final, the score was tied at 3-3 after five ends. Canada then blanked the sixth and seventh ends to finally win with the last stone of the eighth end, 4-3.
The men’s bronze game also went to the last stone, with Sweden scoring three points in the eighth end to seal their medals, 11-9.
The gold medal winning Canadian team are skip Paul Flemming, third Peter Burgess, second Martin Gavin and lead Kris Granchelli, supported by alternate Kevin Ouellette.
The silver medal winning United States team are skip Mike Farbelow, third Rich Ruohonen, second Bill Stopera and lead Darren Lehto, supported by coach Pete Annis.
The bronze medal winning Swedish team are skip Mats Wranaa, third Mikael Hasselborg, second Anders Eriksson and lead Gerry Waahlin, supported by alternate Per Noreen.
