Great Britain and Denmark to play for Youth Olympic mixed doubles gold

After two close games, Great Britain will play Denmark for Youth Olympic mixed doubles gold at 16.00. Meanwhile, Sweden and United States will compete for bronze at 13.00.

Both Great Britain and Denmark competed for the mixed team gold last week, with Great Britain claiming the title. Two members of the Danish team – sibling duo Jacob and Katrine Schmidt – now have a guaranteed second Youth Olympic medal, and will look to improve from silver to gold.

Down to the wire

Sweden made a hit for two in the seventh end on their power-play to level the game against Great Britain, 5-5, playing the last end.

After a perfect freeze on the button by Great Britain’s Ethan Brewster on his last shot, Sweden was faced with a difficult raise. Once the dust settled, the Brits were left as shot stone, giving them the win without having to throw their final stone, 6-5.

“I just can’t believe it,” said Great Britain’s Callie Soutar. “Another close game we had – it wasn’t very easy.”

“A nice last end from us and a good shot from Ethan to get the win,” she said.

“It was an amazing feeling, as soon as that stone stopped I was like ‘this is it, we’re going to win this game!’,” added Brewster.

Brewster knew he had the game in his hands on his final stone.

“I’m sitting in the hack getting ready to go and I was thinking, ‘this is it, we’re going to do it, we’re going to win’,” he said.

Brewster fell to the ice as the game ended, claiming his legs gave out from nerves.

“My legs were just shaking, it was just the biggest relief ever.”

Denmark in back-to-back finals

Denmark held a 5-4 lead with the last stone in the seventh end against United States.

In that end, Denmark attempted a cross house double take-out for a possible multiple score but rolled out, giving the Americans a steal of one to tie the game 5-5.

In the last end, United States tried to draw into a small pocket on the button, but didn’t get shot stone, leaving Denmark with the win, 6-5.

“It was a great game, both teams played well and we are ready for another final,” said Jacob Schmidt.

“We were sitting in a good position [in the last end] and it was an almost impossible shot she had, but fortunately we were still shot,” said Katrine Schmidt.

“We were a little bit nervous in the last end but I think we played it pretty cool out there – we handled it well. We’re ready for a close game again,” said Jacob.
