Session 10 of round-robin play saw Russia defeat Canada and claim the third available play-off spot in the competition. The session also saw wins for Slovakia, Norway and USA.

Russia booked their place in the play-offs with a 7-2 victory over Canada. After blanking the first two ends, Russia scored three points in the third end to take control of the game. Canada responded with a single point in the fourth end before Russia scored a further three points in the fifth end.

A steal of a single point for Russia in the sixth end piled the pressure on Canada who would score a single point in the seventh end before being run out of stones in the eighth end.

Three of the four play-off spots are now locked in. The fourth place could go to either USA or Korea who faced each other in this session with the USA claiming an 8-6 extra end victory.

After five ends this game was tied at 3-3 before USA broke the deadlock in the sixth end with a score of three points. Korea scored a single point in the sixth and stole two points in the seventh when USA skip, Patrick McDonald was light with his attempted takeout.

In the extra end, both teams applied pressure on the other to try to secure the win, but USA would hold their nerve and with last stone, would go on to score two points for the win to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Norway inflicted Switzerland’s first defeat of the week in a game that would see them score in six of the seven ends played. Leading 3-2 after three ends, Norway would then go on to steal single points in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh ends for the 7-2 win.

In the final game of the session Slovakia defeated Germany 6-3. After trading single points throughout the game, the teams were tied at 3-3 going into the eighth end. Slovakia, with the last stone, would go on to score three points for the win.

They Said It:

Andrey Smirnov; Russia Skip (after defeating Canada 7-2 and qualifying for the play-offs): "Now we feel that we did the really important part of our job, but still there is the hardest part waiting for us in play-offs.

We didn’t feel external pressure, it’s more about your internal mistakes and we try to fight with our own mistakes. If all the players implement all tasks it gives you more advantages and good results. So first of all we are fighting not with our direct rivals but with ourselves.

Today we made some mistakes but we corrected and fixed them in time, that’s why we scored more points and if you have these additional points the game is going to be softer and safer."

RESULTS Session 10:

Canada 2-7 Russia; Germany 3-6 Slovakia; Switzerland 2-7 Norway; USA 8-6 Korea.
