Day four of the World Mixed Curling Championship 2017 concluded this evening (Monday 9 October) and the final session saw wins for Czech Republic, USA, Russia and Hungary.

Czech Republic defeated Finland 6-5 in a must win game in order to keep their play-off hopes alive. Four teams in Group B, topped by undefeated Israel, now sit on a record of two wins and two losses with Norway one game ahead with three wins.

USA defeated Belarus 9-3 to bounce back from yesterday’s extra end loss to China to keep their play-off hopes alive. USA opened the scoring with a single point in the first end followed by a steal of two points in the second end to take a lead they would not relinquish. Further scores of three points in the fourth and sixth ends extended USA’s lead and when Belarus could only score a single point in the seventh end they conceded the match.

Hungary defeated Estonia 10-3 helped by scores of three points in the fifth end and four points in the seventh end. While in the remaining game of the session Russia defeated Slovenia 5-4. With the game tied at 4-4 Russia were able to steal the single point they needed for the win and to remain undefeated at the top of their group.

In the early evening session hosts Switzerland returned to winning ways by defeating Hong Kong 11-5. Hong Kong lead 5-2 at the break but after scoring a single point in the fifth end, Switzerland would score steals of four points in both the sixth and seventh end for the victory.

Korea defeated Denmark 7-3 and China defeated France 11-2 to keep their 100% records intact and hold the top spot in each of their groups.

Elsewhere in the session, Spain defeated New Zealand 9-2 and Ireland recorded a 10-3 win over Luxembourg.

They said it

Hunter Clawson; USA skip (after 9-3 win over Belarus): "We have a lot of experience curling on national ice and in international competitions so we were able to adapt to the conditions after our game yesterday, so we came out strong. They had a few key misses and let us in with some good opportunities. Now we need to take each of these last games one at a time. We’re just trying to make sure we know which rocks we like for hopefully a deep play-off run."

Jaroslav Vedral; Czech Republic skip (after 6-5 win over Finland): "The key for us in that game was we were a little better on our take-outs tonight than Finland tonight. It’s good that we have a rest tomorrow. It was an important win tonight but we need three more wins and then we’ll see."

France 2-11 China; Hong Kong 5-11 Switzerland; Ireland 10-3 Luxembourg; New Zealand 2-9 Spain; Korea 7-3 Denmark.

RESULTS Session 12
