Six teams qualify for World Women’s play-offs

By the end of play on Thursday, all six qualifiers – Canada, Italy, Korea, Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark – were confirmed for the play-offs, with the remaining round-robin sessions left to determine the final rankings.

Canada had already qualified at the top of the table, but they consolidated their position with wins against Estonia by 9-4 and New Zealand, 9-2, to sit unbeaten on ten wins.

Behind them, Italy are on nine wins and one loss, thanks to victories over Norway, by 10-2, and Türkiye, by 7-6.

After their game against Norway, skip Stefania Constantini said, “it’s great and I think we qualified with a good game, maybe our best performance so far, so I’m really proud.”

Korea and Switzerland currently share third place, on eight wins and two losses. Korea beat Norway by 7-4 before coming back to beat United States by 9-3.

Switzerland were 10-2 winners over New Zealand and then beat Denmark by 9-1. After the game against Denmark, Swiss skip Silvana Tirinzoni spoke about qualifying, saying, “we’ve achieved our first goal – to qualify for the play-offs. Now we have two games to make our second goal, to finish second.”

Sweden also had a two-win day, beating Estonia by 8-5 and then Japan by 5-3. These results mean that Sweden currently sit in fifth place, to complete a turn-around from losing their opening three games earlier.

Despite their 1-9 loss to Switzerland in their only game on Thursday, Denmark, on six wins and four losses, are now secure in the sixth and last qualification place.
