Canada beat United States by 8-5, while Scotland had a last-stone, 5-4, win over Switzerland in Friday evening’s men’s semi-finals in the World Junior Curling Championships 2018 being held in Curl Aberdeen, Scotland.

This means that Canada and Scotland will face each other for gold and silver medals in Saturday’s final, while United States and Switzerland will play for bronze medals. These games are at 14:00 (Greenwich Mean Time) and the gold medal game is live on World Curling TV -

After blanking the first two ends, Canada opened the scoring with three points in the third end of their semi-final with United States. The Americans responded with a score of two points in the fourth end when their skip Andrew Stopera drew his last stone into the house, but Canada would not surrender their lead. Later, they scored two points in the ninth end, for an 8-5 lead and then ran United States out of stones in the tenth end to secure their victory.

Scotland went into the semi-finals as unbeaten table-toppers from the round-robin stage and they took control of the game early against Switzerland, scoring three points in the second end. Switzerland finally levelled the score at 4-4 in the ninth end with a two-point nose-hit by their skip Jan Hess. But, Scotland skip Ross Whyte kept his nerve in the tenth end to draw the final stone of the game onto the button, scoring the one point needed for the 5-4 win.

These results place the best two teams from the round-robin section in the final, while the third and fourth place finishers will battle for the remaining spot on the podium.

They said it

Tyler Tardi; skip, Canada (after 8-5 semi-final win over United States): "Those three points in the third end were a little unexpected actually. We didn't really see that coming, but obviously we're happy with that start to the game against a good team and how it turned out. Both Scotland and Switzerland are really great teams and both deserved to be this far. We're going to go into the last game and just play how we've been playing and just give it all we've got."

Ross Whyte; skip, Scotland (after 4-5 semi-final win over Switzerland): "I can’t really believe it right now, we’ve just had a really good week so far and we just hope to continue it into the final. They made a good two in the ninth and we wanted to get ourselves into the situation where we had last stone and a shot for the win. We felt quite confident.

"We knew that the ice had been really good for the whole week and we continued to throw a good one at the end, the same as the start. It was always going to be a really tricky one. We didn’t want to look too far in front. It’s still not clicked in. We’re just taking it game by game and we’re just happy that we’re in that medal game tomorrow. Same old, same old hopefully. If we can continue that we’ll be really happy.”

Men semi-final results: Canada 8-5 United States; Switzerland 4-5 Scotland
