July 15 deadline for GSD Athletes in Excellence Awards

Our Olympic Celebration Tour partners, the Foundation for Global Sports Development (GSD), will be announcing their "Athletes in Excellence Award Program" this summer.

As you will see in the Program Outline below, GSD's Athletes in Excellence Award was created to recognise athletes who have been role models, leaders and champions not just in sports but also in using sports to promote education and fair play, as well as to fight the use of doping substances, injustice and intolerance.

Each year GSD will award US and International athletes, active or retired who have competed in elite sport including but not limited to, the Olympics and Paralympics, and who meet the award programme's criteria, with unrestricted grants in the amount of $10,000.00 USD.

In accordance with the directives, nominations will come from international sports governing bodies and the WCF will accept nominations from our MAs.

These nominations will be reviewed with the best candidate(s) selected and forwarded to GSD.

To allow time for the WCF review process, all nominations are to be submitted to the WCF (info@worldcurling.org) by July 15, 2014.

Nominations are to be in writing and include the following:
1. Athlete's name
2. Athlete's current competitive status
3. Depiction of the nominated athlete's humanitarian, outreach or mentorship activities
4. Brief explanation of why you feel they are an ideal candidate for the award.

Athletes in Excellence Awards Program Outline

GSD Athletes in Excellence Award
We are committed to working to preserve the values of fair play, sportsmanship, education, and drug-free competition in the world of sports.

Such a feat would be unattainable without the dedication of the exceptional athletes who are committed to practising and upholding these values.

The Foundation for Global Sports Development’s Athletes in Excellence Award has been created to recognise athletes who have been role models, leaders and champions not just in sports but also in using sports to promote education and fair play, as well as to fight the use of doping substances, injustice and intolerance.

This award will further honour athletes who actively promote a universal spirit of cooperation, friendship, and development, while giving special attention to those who have enhanced the quality of life in their communities through mentorship and outreach.

1. U.S. Athletes in Excellence Award

GSD will award grants to five (5) to ten (10) U.S. athletes, active or retired, who have promoted the above objectives. GSD is open to nominations by anyone.

Awards will be provided to those athletes who have competed in elite sport, including but not limited to, the Olympics and Paralympics and who meet GSD’s Athletes in Excellence Award criteria.

The final decision on award recipients will be announced following GSD board consideration and approval.
