Czech Republic remain unbeaten in Le Gruyère AOP European’s B-Division

Men

The B-Division men were back in action on Tuesday morning with Group A games in their seventh round-robin session at the Le Gruyère AOP Curling European Championships 2018.

Hungary came out 9-4 winners over Turkey. Seven points in ends six to eight were crucial in giving Turkey the edge over Poland who conceded afterwards.

Home-crowd heroes Estonia made a comeback from being 5-1 down against Slovakia after four ends to secure an eventual 9-8 victory.

Latvia won 8-5 over Spain. The Latvian team took the lead after the fourth end and left Spain with no chance to recover.

Czech Republic came out on top of their match against France. The Czechs took control of the game from the sixth end onwards and France eventually conceded an 8-3 victory. This result sees Czech Republic now head the table alongside Spain, both on four wins, with a game in hand.

Women

Later, the B-Division women returned to the ice in their sixth round-robin session.

Hosts Estonia recorded their third win of the competition in their match against Lithuania. The Estonian team took a crucial two-point score in the final end to secure a 5-4 victory.

England became the first team to beat Norway. England took a two-point lead after the fourth end and held their advantage for a 7-5 win. Norway however still head the table on five victories.

Turkey had the upper hand over Slovenia in a 10-5 win. The Turkish team opened the scoring and gave Slovenia no chance to bounce back. This result takes Turkey to five victories and the top of the table alongside Norway.

Spain came out winners over Hungary. Spain were leading 5-1 after six ends, but Hungary came back to level and take the game to an extra end. In that extra end, the Spanish team that took the crucial final point.

Spanish skip Oihane Otaegi made her 100th appearance for her country in this game. She said before the match, “I never thought I would make my 100th game. I started playing curling when I was 28, so it’s a great moment for me.”

Poland came out 5-2 winners over Slovakia. A three-point score in the ninth end was key for Poland in a low-scoring match.
