Royal opening for Le Gruyère European Curling Championships 2015

  • Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to deliver first stone at ECC 2015

From 20 to 28 November, Esbjerg will host the Le Gruyère European Curling Championships 2015, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark will be part of the opening ceremony.

The royal visit provides an excellent opportunity to promote the championship, curling and the city of Esbjerg. Tickets for the opening and the rest of the event are available now at http://www.worldcurling.org/ecc2015/tickets

In 2011, Esbjerg hosted the World Women’s Curling Championships and HRH Crown Prince Frederik went on the ice to deliver the first stone. The Crown Prince will once again be present at this year’s opening, which takes place on Friday 20 November at 16:00 (Central European Time).

Some 46 teams will compete in a total of 227 games during the week and across the event's two divisions (A and B).

The World Curling Federation (WCF) is responsible for the championships, while the Municipality of Esbjerg, Sport Event Denmark and the Danish Curling Federation cooperate on creating the best possible setting for this event, which will allow national and international players, spectators and visitors to have an unforgettable time in Esbjerg.

”We look forward to the royal visit, because Crown Prince Frederik once again supports a huge sport event hosted by us. We prioritize professional sports and the energy from this suits the atmosphere and the enterprise in the EnergyMetropolis of Denmark. I look forward to demonstrating this with the Crown Prince at the curling championships,” said Johnny Søtrup, Mayor of the Municipality of Esbjerg.

The royal visit will draw extra attention around the tournament and the sport of curling. Some of the players will also get to meet the Crown Prince.

”It is very important, that the Crown Prince participates and acknowledges our sport and the work, we have put into hosting an international championship. Apart from the opening, he will also have the opportunity to meet some of our athletes, volunteers and members of the World Curling Federation,” said Susanne Slotsager, chairperson of the Danish Curling Federation.

At Sport Event Denmark, CEO Lars Lundov complimented the support, which the Crown Prince offers Danish sports and his frequent visits at large to international sporting events in Denmark. He said: ”During the summer, we have had the honour of a royal visit at the World Cup in sprint kayak and the Made in Denmark Golf European Tour. We look forward to welcoming Crown Prince Frederik in Esbjerg.”
