Qualification games set
So to confirm, here’s the play-off picture for tomorrow:
Qualification games (10:00)
Italy v Sweden
Canada v Japan
Semi-finals (16:00)
Switzerland v Italy/Sweden
Norway v Canada/Japan
All times are CET (Central European Time) which is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) +1 hour.
It is a bit unexpected, says Roervik after reaching semis
Let’s hear from Norway skip Marianne Roervik on her team reaching the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years.
“Oh its amazing,” she said. “It is a bit unexpected from where we started the week. To be second seed is really nice.
“We tried not to look at the game (Sweden v Denmark) next to us. We can only control our own game – even if we did glance a little bit. But when we saw Denmark win, we realised we couldn’t give this up.
“We need to calm down and enjoy it. We want to play the same game we’ve played all week and try not to do anything difference.”
Türkiye get W
Türkiye do get that sixth victory of the week as they beat Scotland 10-7 to finish eighth in the standings.
The team have big smiles on their faces – and why shouldn’t they? It’s a superb result and an ever better campaign.
Norway reach semis
Like Alina Paetz, Kristen Skaslien loves a last-stone throw under pressure. It finishes with a 6-3 victory over Germany.
For the first time since 2005, Norway have reached the semi-finals of the World Women’s Curling Championship. A fantastic week for Marianne Roervik’s team.
Oh, and Martine Roenning did get that perfect game. Can it get any better for Norway?
Clean sweep for Switzerland
Cowbells are ringing loudly.
Korea pushed Switzerland as hard as any team this week and force Alina Paetz to throw a pin-point last stone. But who would ever doubt the six-time world champion? She makes the take-out and that’s win number 12.
33 in a row. Stunning, absolutely stunning.
And here’s that game-winning shot…
Alina Paetz 🇨🇭 nails the short runback takeout for the win! they stay unbeaten in the round-robin!

Denmark do the double
That’s win number five for Madeleine Dupont and co.
It might not have been a competition to remember for Denmark but what a superb finish to their week! After convincingly defeating Canada this afternoon, they’ve beaten hosts Sweden 9-4 to end their campaign on a high.
That also confirms Sweden’s participation in tomorrow morning’s qualification games.
Perfect game incoming?
Could we get a seventh perfect game of this round robin? Martine Roenning is trying her best to join the illustrious list. After 18 stones, she boasts 100% shot percentage – just two to play…
Nevertheless, the bigger picture for Norway here is a semi-final spot. They lead 5-3 going into the last end with the hammer.

Türkiye ending on a high
When Türkiye arrive back home in Erzurum next week, no doubt Dilsat Yildiz, Öznur Polat, Mihriban Polat and Berfin Şengül will be proud of their performances in Sandviken.
The quartet currently lead Scotland 8-5 with two ends to go. If it stays how it is, they’ll finish in eighth position with six victories – an improvement on their 11th-placed finish from last year’s event.

Sweden down
Team Anna Hasselborg are facing an uphill climb if they want to get through directly to the semi-finals. Sweden trail Denmark 6-3 after seven ends. At this moment in time, the hosts will go up against Italy in tomorrow morning’s qualification game.
All could change, though…
Throwback to...
Over the last week we’ve taken a trip down memory lane to past world title winners. This time, we’re going to head back to the last time a team got the better of Switzerland.
Team Silvana Tirinzoni’s 32-game winning streak began in 2021 after they suffered defeat to Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg. With both teams in the play-offs this weekend in Sandviken, could we see these two face off again? It’s an epic rivalry that has spanned 54 matches, with Tirinzoni just edging it with 28 victories.
Here’s a shot from Sweden’s win over Switzerland in the 2021 event…

Half-time scores
Let’s take a look at the scores halfway through this evening’s session..
Scotland 2-6 Türkiye
Sweden 2-2 Denmark
Norway 2-1 Germany
Korea 2-2 Switzerland
If the results were to stand now, this would be the play-off bracket for tomorrow (final standings in brackets):
Switzerland (1) and Norway (2) into the semi-final spots, while Canada (3) would face Japan (6) and Italy (4) would take on Sweden (5).

Muirhead jinx
Eve Muirhead you say, didn’t she retire last year?
The 2022 Olympic champion did indeed – but she is currently commentating on Norway v Germany for home. Ahead of Kristen Skaslien’s last-stone draw, where she had the whole house to aim for, Muirhead simply said: “There’s not a chance she’ll miss this.”
Cut to 30 seconds later and Skaslien’s stone flies through the house. Muirhead blushes. Norway still registered a deuce, so not all lost. They currently lead Germany 2-0 into the fourth end.
Early stages
Denmark and Sweden have exchanged deuces to start off their tie – which we’ve dubbed the ‘Oeresund Bridge’ derby.
Norway are happy to blank the first couple of ends against Germany, while Korea take a single to lead 1-0 against the unbeaten Switzerland after two.
Türkiye, who will definitely better their position in the standings from last year, are 2-1 ahead against Scotland.
Possible semi-finallists...
As we mentioned before, Switzerland are confirmed as #1 seeds through to the play-offs.
The final direct route to the semi-final is a battle between Sweden, Norway and Canada.
For those who aren’t aware, it goes to a head-to-head between tied teams before it goes to the draw-shot challenge numbers. The only countries who might be decided by DSC are (for many reasons which might put you to sleep):
Canada – 23.69cm
Japan – 29.94cm
Italy – 30.70cm
Therefore, it’ll be results rather than DSC that decides who will get that second semi-final berth. Shall we get back to the action on ice?
Line-up changes
Germany have opted for a single change to their line up. Lena Kapp, who played the first four games in the round robin, returns at second. Welcome back.
Likewise, Gina Aitken comes back in at third in place of Jennifer Dodds for Scotland.

What's to play for?
Plenty, to be honest.
Firstly, a win at the World Women’s Curling Championship is not something to be sniffed at. Secondly, the final positions in the standings. Lastly, picking up or gaining momentum ahead of the play-offs. Told you.
Switzerland are seeking a second sweep in a row of the round-robin stage at the worlds. They face Korea on Sheet D. It’s the first time these two quartet have met on a curling rink.
A Scandinavian match-up between Sweden and Denmark is the 14th time these two line-ups have faced off – Hasselborg and co lead with nine wins.
Praise from one national champion to another
Congratulations @CurlingCanada’s @EinarsonTeam on qualifying for the #WWCC2023 playoffs! We can’t wait to keep cheering loud and proud from home! You have an entire country behind you! Now go get it! Go 🇨🇦 Go! https://t.co/rioLUQC8Vk

Italy make history
In case you didn’t know, this is the first time ever Italy have qualified for the play-offs at a World Women’s Curling Championship. It’s also the first time they’ve finished the round-robin stage with a winning record.
At an average age of 22 years old, and an Olympic Winter Games in the team’s home town in three years’ time, the future is bright for Italian curling.
Welcome back
We all needed a lie down after that afternoon session.
Well, things should be a little calmer in the next draw – but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to play for. The only thing we do know is that Switzerland are through to the semi-finals – but who will they play?
After 19 round-robin sessions, the play-off field is set at the LGT World Women’s Championship!
Switzerland 🇨🇭
Norway 🇳🇴
Sweden 🇸🇪
Canada 🇨🇦
Italy 🇮🇹
Japan 🇯🇵But we’ll have one more round-robin session to go at 7 pm (CET).#Curling #WWCC2023

Top six confirmed
So to confirm, in order of current standings, here are the teams who’ve qualified for the play-offs…
1. Switzerland (11-0)
2. Norway (7-4)
3. Sweden (7-4)
4. Canada (7-5)
5. Italy (7-5)
6. Japan (7-5)
Congratulations to all the teams. A fantastic achievement!
Korea deny United States
Unfortunately, it’s not to be for the 2021 bronze medallists. A devastating way to be denied right at the death. Korea seal the win with a steal of two to triumph 10-6 over Tabitha Peterson’s rink. Heart-breaking for the Americans.
That confirms our play-off contenders. What a finale!
Giulia was on fire today, says an awaiting Constantini
Here’s the quick thoughts of Italy skip Stefania Constantini.
“Our lead threw some really important shots today,” she said. “Giulia [Zardini Lacedelli] was on fire.”
Indeed she was. The 20-year-old lead threw a perfect game today, making 16 draws and two hits. That’s the sixth 100% performance of the week.
“We tried to push a bit today,” added Constantini. “We’re so happy. Regardless, we wanted to finish with a win – maybe we’re in, we’ll have to wait.”
You might not have to wait much longer…

JPN record victory over NZL
And Japan join Italy on seven wins after they defeat New Zealand 7-5 in nine ends. It’s all happening everywhere, everything, all at once! (See what we did there?)
All eyes now on United States v Korea.

Italy get W - is it enough?
Anna Hasselborg can’t quite connect with her angle-raise take-out and concedes a steal of one point for Italy. And that’ll be handshakes.
A massive sigh of relief from Stefania Constantini and her teammates. They tightly squeeze together. All attention turns to the remaining games on ice…
This is why we love curling, right?
Left on ice
All three games left on ice will have an enormous effect on who’ll be returning to the Göransson Arena tomorrow. Japan, Italy and United States need a win to join Canada on seven wins. Here’s how we stand…
Japan 7-5 New Zealand (after nine)
Italy 7-3 Sweden (after nine)
United States 6-8 Korea (after nine)
So, as it stands, United States would drop out and the play-off berths will be confirmed. But, as we keep reminding you, things can change in an instance.
Dupont: We'll be back
That’s Denmark’s first win recorded against Canada in the World Women’s Curling Championship since 2012. Here’s the thoughts of skip Madeleine Dupont after her team’s superb performance in beating Team Kerri Einarson.
“I didn’t think I’d be back here in the mixed zone with a win again,” Dupont openly admitted. “We’ve never beaten this team before because they’re awesome and it feels really good to have that winning feeling again.”
“We knew we were out of it and it made us feel more relaxed today, which helped a lot.
“We thought we’d play much better this week. Too much was not good enough but we’ll be back.”
Denmark grab fourth success
That’s not a bad way to win on your last day in Sandviken! European champions Madeleine Dupont and her teammates get the better of Canada, winning 11-5 in eight ends.
Canada finish their round-robin games with a record of seven victories and five defeats. They face an agonising wait to see if they’ve reached the play-offs.
Before the Danes head back home over the Oeresund Bridge, they will face hosts Sweden this evening in their 12th and final game of the week.
And we go live to...
An exclusive for you all. We’ve got access into Tabitha Peterson’s mind as she figures out this whole play-off situation…
Denmark in charge
Could Madeleine Dupont throw a spanner (that’s a wrench for those in North American) in the works? Well, she’s certainly throwing some super stones against Canada this afternoon.
A steal of one for Manitobans Kerri Einarson and co keep them in the tie, trailing 7-5 going into the eighth. Don’t adjust your television sets, or phones, or tablets, or laptops – so many options to tune in these days.

Play-off battle
So many different permutations, changing with every end. This is probably our statisticians’ nightmare (or perhaps, dream – depends on how you look at it).
Italy, Japan and United States all have six wins and five losses. They all have a head-to-head record of 1-1 against one another. Could this come down to draw-shot challenge? How cruel it could be…
Half-time scores
Denmark 7-3 Canada
Madeleine Dupont draws for a comfortable three points to stretch Denmark’s lead to 7-3 after five. Can Canada fight back after the break?
United States 3-4 Korea
Ha Seungyoun also draws for a three-ender to regain her rink’s advantage. Korea are unable to reach the play-offs but United States can – a success here will certainly help their case.
Sweden 2-4 Italy
A to-and-fro fifth end means Anna Hasselborg is forced to take one. Italy will be pleased with that result, and the scoreline, going into the interval.
New Zealand 3-3 Japan
Fujisawa Satsuki opts to blank the fifth end which keeps the scores level at three apiece. Japan will likely need a win here if they want to return tomorrow.
Highlights available
Want to catch up on this week’s previous match-ups? You can do just that.
Check out the highlights from Sandviken here.

Giulia Zardini Lacedelli's excellent week
Kevin Martin and Niklas Edin are waxing lyrical over Italy’s lead Giulia Zardini Lacedelli’s shot percentage this week. Not bad praise from a pair of Olympic champions, eh?
Lacedelli is out ahead of other leads with 90%. Fantastic work. She’ll hope this isn’t her last outing in Sandviken this week. Italy and Sweden are tied at 1-1 after three.

Shot watch
And here is that delightful draw for a deuce from Jessica Smith. She returned for New Zealand’s tie against Norway last night and this is her fifth game of the week. Is she able to produce a shock win over Team Fujisawa and shake up the play-off race?
Fantastic draw from Jessica Smith 🇳🇿 to cover a piece of the button to score two points!

After two
Sweden and Italy trade one-pointers in the opening couple of ends, while Canada take a 2-1 advantage over Denmark going into the third.
New Zealand bag a deuce in the second to lead Japan 2-1 courtesy of Jessica Smith’s draw to the button. After opting to blank the first, Korea are forced to take one by United States the next end.
So far, no big swings. Likely to change as we move through the session, of course…
Our commentary team
We’ve been blessed to have some of the best on the microphone with us this week, including: Sander Roelvaag, Rhona Howie, Joanne Courtney, Kevin Martin, Luke Coley, Niklas Edin, Mike Harris, Kosuke Morozumi and Richard Harding all providing their expertise.
You can hear them, and watch some curling of course, on the Curling Channel (geo-blocking applies). Here’s some shots of them in their environment…

Tantalising Sweden-Italy tie
Victory for either Sweden or Italy here will mean a good shot at occupying a spot in tomorrow’s play-offs (Team Hasselborg can still qualify even if they lose).
Italy’s preparation for this final round-robin game has been shaky, losing their last three games. Stefania Constantini’s rink have faced the 2018 Olympic Champions six times previously, winning only once at last year’s Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships.
Last time on ice for NZL
This’ll be the last game of the week for New Zealand – and what a fantastic team they’ve been this week. Despite being without win, the heart and determination they’ve demonstrated in Sandviken on their world championship debut is to be admired. A last chance for the team to get a win in this afternoon’s match-up against Japan.
Just the once these teams have faced off against one another, at last year’s inaugural Pan Continental Curling Championships, when Team Fujisawa came out on top.

A really tough game, says Roervik
Here’s some post-match reaction from Norway skip Marianne Roervik after they qualified for tomorrow’s play-off matches.
“It’s always a really tough game against Italy – they’re a really good team,” she said. “It was a 50/50 match.
“We were in control and played a good game. We were unlucky in the tenth and made it tough on ourselves.”
They’ll be back tonight to face Germany. A direct route to the semi-finals up for grabs!
Norway get win #7 and qualify
Stefania Constantini has a chance to freeze on the button with her last stone but her draw falls short of being shot stone. That’s the game for Norway. What a superb match.
And with that, Marianne Roervik’s rink join Switzerland in the play-offs. It’s been quite the display so far this week for Norway. Congratulations to the team. Can Roervik get a third World Women’s Curling Championship medal?
For Italy, they join United States and Japan on six wins, five losses. What could have been…

Tirinzoni: We want to keep up the momentum
That’s 11-0 for Switzerland in Sandviken. One more game to go. Can they get a round-robin clean sweep?
“They (Scotland) played really good,” said Silvana Tirinzoni. “That slash for two in the ninth was amazing.
“When we play any team here we have to keep focussed otherwise they fight back.
“We want to keep up the momentum. It is not always easy when you know you’ve already qualified and the game doesn’t mean anything. But we want to keep this feeling for the next games.”

Switzerland streak stays alive
Scotland pushed them as close as they’ve been to defeat all week but the ever-reliable, always-calm Alina Paetz delivers a pin-point draw tap for one, and the 7-6 victory for Switzerland.
Fantastic match. But the Swiss march on…
We’ll hear from Silvana Tirinzoni shortly.
An extra end incoming..
Could this be a deciding moment in not just Italy’s, but Norway’s campaign in Sandviken?
Stefania Constantini has an opportunity for three, needing a single-stone take-out – but a measurement indicates only two points are scored. So close. We’re now into an extra end.
Might the Italian skip rue that shot come this evening…
Can Scotland produce shock win?
Chants of “Let’s go, Scotland, let’s go!” can be heard around the Göransson Arena.
Rebecca Morrison’s play-off hopes might have been dashed away – but can they be the first to team to beat Switzerland at a Women’s World Curling Championship in 32 tries?
They are tied at 6-6 going into the final end. Switzerland have the hammer…
Canada's winning moment
And here is that wonderful last stone from Kerri Einarson…

Italy-Norway final end
A well-delivered draw to the button in the ninth from Kristen Skaslien puts Norway 5-3 ahead going into the final end. Both teams are currently boasting a 6-4 record – who can add a win to their tally?
Einarson: Our execution was on point today
And here’s Canada skip Kerri Einarson giving us her post-match reaction.
“They put some pressure on us and made us make some shots,” she said. “They had good rock placement. But our execution was on point today.”
On facing Madeleine Dupont’s Denmark rink later today, she added: “We’ve always had good games against Denmark. Our game was really good today, so if we can carry that on and maybe get a bit sharper, then it should be a good game.”
Fantastic shot to win for Canada
Kerri Einarson, take a bow. That’s how you win a game of curling. A raised double take-out leaves Canada lying four and that’s all she wrote. An early candidate for the acclaimed ‘Shot of the Day’, surely.
The match finishes 10-4 and puts Canada at 7-4 with one round-robin game remaining against Denmark this afternoon.
Stat check
Canadian Shannon Birchard is having a strong game this morning. A world champion from 2018 – as an alternate for Team Jennifer Jones – Birchard’s tournament average was sitting at 83% before today’s draw.

Our best performance, says Fujisawa
Fujisawa Satsuki spoke to us after her team move to 6-5 in Sandviken.
“Our performances are getting better and better,” said the Japanese skip. “We have a good chance to qualify and that was our best display.
“The first day here I was really nervous – probably why we lost. But now, I’m enjoying every game and it’s now a lot of fun.”
Japan stake play-offs claim with win
Germany skip Daniela Jentsch’s draw to the button comes up short and gives Japan a steal of two – and that’s handshakes. A big 7-1 success for Fujisawa Satsuki’s team.
Japan began the week shakily but have been unstoppable in their last few games. That’s a third win in a row – are they peaking at the right time?
Sisters...assemble!
If you haven’t noticed yet, we have four sets of sisters in Sandviken this week…
Tabitha and Tara Peterson (United States)

Madeleline and Denise Dupont (Denmark)

Yoshida Chinami and Yurika (Japan)

Daniela and Analena Jentsch (Germany)

We also have cousins Öznur Polat and Mihriban Polat (Türkiye).

A family outing in Sweden…
Half-time scores
Let’s take a look at the scores five ends through…
Japan – Germany
A blanked end just before the break means Japan stay 4-1 up against Germany. Fujisawa Satsuki will have the last-stone advantage in the even sixth end.
Switzerland – Scotland
Rebecca Morrison hits for one to reduce the margin but it is the defending champions in Switzerland who lead into the interval.
Türkiye – Canada
Dilsat Yildiz has a slim chance at a double take-out to score three but can only remove one Canadian stone and gets a deuce. Kerri Einarson’s rink in charge after five.
Norway 2-1 Italy
A straight-forward blank from Kristen Skaslien allows them to take the lead and hammer into the sixth end – after a quick snack and drink, of course.
Germany grab a single
Germany are on the board. After back-to-back steals for Fujisawa Satsuki, the German quartet are forced to take one. Can Daniela Jentsch get her team on the front foot? They are throwing at under 70% after the first four ends.
Shot watch
Türkiye get on the board and reduce the deficit to three as they trail Canada 4-1 on Sheet C. Nevertheless, lovely draw to the button from Dilsat Yildiz…

The prize on offer
And this is what they all want to take home with them on Sunday…

Early leads
After a blanked opening end, Norway get the deuce in the next end against Italy courtesy of Kristen Skaslien’s last-stone hit for two.
Switzerland, on a 31-game winning streak, are forced to one in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Elsewhere, Canada follow up their score of one in the first to grab a steal of three the next end over Türkiye, while Japan lead 3-0 against Germany.
Head-to-head
What has happened when these teams have faced off before…
Japan 8-2 Germany: This is the first meeting between the rinks since the Olympic Qualification Event in 2021, with the Japanese quartet having the better record over their German counterparts.
Switzerland 2-1 Scotland: Just the three previous ties between Team Rebecca Morrison and Team Silvana Tirinzoni, with the front-runners here in Sandviken having the slight edge. The most recent encounter took place at last year’s Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships, with Switzerland winning 9-3.
Canada 1-0 Türkiye: A solidatary meeting between skips Kerri Einarson and Dilsat Yildiz was fought at last year’s event with Canada getting the victory.
Norway 3-0 Italy: Marianne Roervik has skipped her team to three wins in as many games over Stefania Constantini – most recently in January 2023 at the Perth Masters.
